Drawing from life is a beautiful thing. I requires concentration, patience and a fluent and confident line - and in turn it rewards you with a magical feeling of clarity and ownership: clarity in what you see and how you see it, and a happiness-inducing ownership over the moment and the world around you.
After two years of sketching people in the streets that move annoyingly fast and secretly drawing in cafes and bars whilst trying to look inconspicuous, I have returned to the wonderful activity that is life drawing. Here is a funny one from the latest session - using an 8B graphite pencil that provides an exciting challenge due to sometimes producing unpredictable marks and movements on the paper.

I for my part am not a big fan of new year's resolutions because they tend to put me under pressure and make me anxious. However, I am a fan of lists and plans. One of my plans for the coming months and years (until the day I die) is to read a good selection of all the important books in the world, including the classics and the newer ones. One of the most important books of the century is certainly "To Kill a Mockingbird" which would be on top of my list had I not read it already. So here is an illustration of its hero.
